Commitment

Definition of commitment: dedication;
Definition of commit: to pledge or bind.

When a woman becomes a mother, the bond of commitment - which is formed in an instant - is unbreakable; and over time becomes a reciprocal bond.  At least that is my experience in my family.

This past week has been somewhat challenging as we still do not have home health care in Mom's home.  Voyageur is ready to get someone in there, the finances and Mom's long term care insurance got screwed up and are still being fixed.  It's quite bizarre - Mom was in the banking industry for well over two decades and handled the finances at home.  Never had a large debt - except for the mortgage - bills were ALWAYS paid on time, money saved.

Dementia ate away the part of her brain which carries sound judgment, understanding of finances and complex situations.  So, over two years past initial diagnosis we still don't have a good handle on her finances.  Voyageur is over at Mom's house more days than not, Mom wanting to go grocery shopping, needing the TV 'fixed', and really her just being lonely and wanting company.

My conversations with Mom have become even more circular, more about the weather and what I have eaten or am going to eat than anything else.  Sometimes about crochet and what she is making me.

Lately it is easier for me not to call her than to call - but if I don't call, she calls me at some point in the day.  I forget that it's not about the content of the call, but the call itself.  To hear her voice and all she wants is to hear my voice.

Commitment - not always easy when faced with a difficult situation.  The reason the bond is unbreakable is because it is flexible.  It allows for pulling, stretching, tension.  And in the end I always come home.

Back at ya Voyageur.
