Happy Birthday!
Barbra Streisand turned 70 earlier this week. And her voice still sends shivers down my spine. A voice that has texture, depth, and holds a note forever.
Mom turned 71 a few days ago. We grew up listening to Streisand and watching her films. Favorites are What's up Doc? and Yentl, ok maybe the Way We Were too :) Mom had all of Barbra's albums.
If Dad were alive, he would be 81 in a few days. Dad was a feminist and a huge sap (guess I take after him as we watched The Way We Were together).
Birthdays have always been a big celebration in our family. We (Mom and me) would make the birthday cake together, make the frosting - I would eat lots of frosting :) and then decorate the cake. It didn't matter what it looked like, just that we did it together.
Voyageur's birthday is the Fourth of July - she always got sparklers on her cake. Mom wanted to make sure my birthday felt just as important, so we always did some big thing. With Mom and Dad's birthdays being a week apart, we would do mini celebrations separate (breakfast in bed) and then sometimes a larger celebration for both.
As we got older, Mom and Dad asked that we stop giving them presents and instead donate money to a charity - our favorite or one of their favorites. These days she has some idea of when people's birthdays are, but she is never sure which month we are in.
My favorite birthday memory is when I got chicken pox on her birthday and I ran around telling everyone her age - and how 'old' she was - I was a whole six and a half, she was 31 :) (I kinda miss using the halves). It's not often I miss her birthday - if I do, I'm usually home within a few weeks after. This year my schedule is not quite as flexible, but I'm looking to make it home soon.
Happy Birthday Mom! (albeit a few days late). I love you! and here's one of our favorite Babs songs (we would sing it together in the car)
